  • A Guide to Free Games on the Internet

    Published August 12th, 2008

When you sit down and think about it, no other invention has impacted our lives more than the internet. You can make money fast (and spend it just as quickly); you can keep in contact with old friends, and make plenty of new acquaintances; you can check the weather on the other side of the globe, and download free games right into your living room- all while never leaving the comfort of your own home.

How many times have you surfed the internet looking for a decent gaming site and found one that offered free games for you to play, either with a free trial to that new release that you’ve been dying to check out, or a favorite “oldie but goodie” that you can download or play instantly online. Everything is going along perfectly untilPop-ups, banners and other truly annoying tidbits start ruining your fun and destroying your computer. Now you have to remove everything you’ve downloaded, with the highest of hopes that these annoyances leave along with them.

The truly best means to avoid these frustrations is to steer clear of them from the very beginning. Finding a trustworthy, free game site online that doesn’t allow such nuisances (typically a form of advertising-for the site to make money) can be a difficult, time consuming task, for there are very few sites that will give you a good experience. That’s why we’re here- to cut through the chaos for you.

First, just as mentioned above, you won’t want to access free online games through a site that allows advertising to include such annoying pop-ups, banners, spy-ware, etc. A legitimate site will make such warnings to would be advertisers with some sort of “intolerance policy”. They will also not have such advertisements on their site.

Next, a reputable game site will have a means in which they legitimately make money. Maybe they sell software and/or game consoles, or they might just have a separate, legitimate business, operating the gaming site because they simply love to play.

Thirdly, look for help options on the free gaming website of choice, both for downloading and removing games. What good would help for downloading do you if you were trying to remove a program? Clear, concise topics that lead to a direct web page (not keeping you running around in circles) will help keep the nasties out of your computer, too.

If, after checking for all of the above, you are still unsure or feel uneasy about the situation, by all means, don’t download anything into your system. While little can be done to harm your system while playing a free game online, losing your entire hard-drive to such an avoidable item is preposterous.

Arcade Games - The Good Ole Days

    Published August 5th, 2008

I remember playing my first arcade game in a bar in Montreal. It was 1981 I was underage, drunk, in a digital delirium, and the arcade game was the original Pacman. This was about the coolest thing I had ever seen. I’d always had a thing for games, even before the first arcades and arcade games sprung up. Even before computer games for the home PC. I used to subscribe to games magazines that never, ever mentioned the word computer. This was something totally new and sumptuously fascinating. Countless hours of my well wasted youth were spent in arcades, long after plenty of beer swilling at the local pub. Arcade games, and computer games have come a long way since then, but there’s nothing like your first time.

Frag This You Bourgeoisie Backgammond Barnacle

Shortly after my lascivious encounter with arcades and the hypnotizing arcade game jewels hidden within, my family purchased it’s first home PC. A radio shack trs-80. More commonly called a trash-80. It was here that I learned the cunningly devious game of backgammon. Not sure I would have ever learned that game without being introduced to it by a computer. It’s not the kind of game that would have appealed to a veteran of the arcade game wars. Something that belonged more to the smoky backrooms of a retirement home. Computers, arcades, and arcade games were already broadening my vistas.

    Avast Commodore, Ya Scurvy Megabyte

Next on my list of technological wonders ya scallywags, is the Commodore 64. Now here was an arcade game killer if I every gazed upon one. Arcades are few and far between now, and the Commodore, is one of the reasons why. Why spend hours in an arcade, having a machina suck and swallow every last quarter in my pocket? When I can sit in the less the luxurious decadence of my basement playing the likes of jumpman, and setting arcade game style high scores for my baby brother to frantically try to match. Not like in the arcades where he could be humbled in front of the masses, but this arcade game jewel would serve my purposes none the less.

    Arcadia Arise Oh Mighty Griffon

Old is new, black is blue, and from the depth, arises the legends of old and times forgotten. Huh? What I’m frothing forth about here, is that arcade games are back with a vengeance. All us old fogies, who remember time spent in arcades watching the neighborhood masters pummel evil incarnate up till level 9999 rejoice! You can once again relive the glories of the golden age of arcade games. Just google around a little, and you’ll find free versions of all the great arcade game from the past. Not to mention a few new legends being born in the ancient art of arcade games. And hey save your quarters. These games are free as the air you breathe. Of course you better not let those quarters get too far, your gonna need them to keep that old jalopy of a Commodore in running order.

Why Downloading Games Before You Play Will Save You a Bundle

    Published July 5th, 2008

Have you ever gone online and saw a game that looked amazing? It had the elements of fun, addictiveness and cost you were looking for. You paid your $20 and was ready to have hours of unadulterated fun. Slip into another world and let the troubles of this world pass you by. Then something happened. After you downloaded the game, installed it and then played it some you came to a realization. This is a TERRIBLE game. You feel ripped off never to play a game again purchased online. Was this the publisher’s fault exclusively, or do you bear some of the responsibility? Let’s take a look and see.

If you go onto any major game site, you will normally see two separate links. One link is to purchase a game, another link is to try it. If you have never played the game before, it makes much more sense to try the game. You may find that after 15 minutes you are bored to death. You have not spent any money and you are free to try another game or go on a cheap date with another gamer friend who is equally frustrated with the quality of some game he/she bought.

There is another way! You may want to go with the “try” links and compare several games from the same genre to see which suits you best. What can it hurt? If you are into Match 3 games, maybe it is best to try 10 different games and see which is the most fun. You can delete the lame ones from your hard drive and settle into the game YOU like the best. Not just the one that is rated the best or has the best marketing spin but the one YOU find to be the most fun.

There is no reason to go out online and spend hundreds of dollars buying games you don’t like. The game distributors promote the use of “try” links to web publishers because the thought is the game will be fun enough for you to want to purchase. Will you every time? No, but they understand this and still want to give you the opportunity to try the game before you buy. Who buys a car without test driving it? Who buys a house without looking at it? Who buys clothes without trying them on (OK, I might be guilty there) You get the point, products should be tested before they are bought and if there is system in place for you to test the product and you choose to ignore it does the distributor bear the blame?

Pit one game against another and see what you like the best before buying and in doing so you will find that your game playing enjoyment will increase and your costs will decrease.
