  • Why Downloading Games Before You Play Will Save You a Bundle

    Published July 5th, 2008

Have you ever gone online and saw a game that looked amazing? It had the elements of fun, addictiveness and cost you were looking for. You paid your $20 and was ready to have hours of unadulterated fun. Slip into another world and let the troubles of this world pass you by. Then something happened. After you downloaded the game, installed it and then played it some you came to a realization. This is a TERRIBLE game. You feel ripped off never to play a game again purchased online. Was this the publisher’s fault exclusively, or do you bear some of the responsibility? Let’s take a look and see.

If you go onto any major game site, you will normally see two separate links. One link is to purchase a game, another link is to try it. If you have never played the game before, it makes much more sense to try the game. You may find that after 15 minutes you are bored to death. You have not spent any money and you are free to try another game or go on a cheap date with another gamer friend who is equally frustrated with the quality of some game he/she bought.

There is another way! You may want to go with the “try” links and compare several games from the same genre to see which suits you best. What can it hurt? If you are into Match 3 games, maybe it is best to try 10 different games and see which is the most fun. You can delete the lame ones from your hard drive and settle into the game YOU like the best. Not just the one that is rated the best or has the best marketing spin but the one YOU find to be the most fun.

There is no reason to go out online and spend hundreds of dollars buying games you don’t like. The game distributors promote the use of “try” links to web publishers because the thought is the game will be fun enough for you to want to purchase. Will you every time? No, but they understand this and still want to give you the opportunity to try the game before you buy. Who buys a car without test driving it? Who buys a house without looking at it? Who buys clothes without trying them on (OK, I might be guilty there) You get the point, products should be tested before they are bought and if there is system in place for you to test the product and you choose to ignore it does the distributor bear the blame?

Pit one game against another and see what you like the best before buying and in doing so you will find that your game playing enjoyment will increase and your costs will decrease.

Tips for Downloading Movies and Games for Your PSP

    Published March 18th, 2008

So you own a PSP? Lucky you, but I bet you’ve wished you could download an unlimited number movies and games for it. Now you can. Actually, there are several sites that you can do this with. Sure I could list these sites and tell you which one I would use, but instead I will give you some tips on what to look for in these sites and let you make that decision. If you really want to know which site I recommend, click on the link below. On to the tips:

    1. First and foremost, what kind of download limit is there? You don’t want to be downloading something and find out you have exceeded your limit and will have to wait until next month to finish it. Only go for sites with unlimited download access.
    2. What kind of customer service is offered? If they do not offer customer service, more than likely you are going to want to stay away.
    3. Can you preview at least some of the content you can download? If not, how can you be sure what you are getting?
    4. What else do they offer? Most quality sites will offer not only games and movies for your PSP, but also other things such as TV episodes and music. This way you get more ‘bang’ for your buck. Even if your really only interested in getting games, at least you know you could get that episode of CSI that you missed the other night.
    5. You get what you pay for. If it’s free, it probably doesn’t work or is extremely complicated and inconvenient to use.
    6. What are the payment terms? Is it month to month or a 1 time fee? Personally I prefer the 1 time fee. That way I don’t have to worry about it since it’s paid for and usually the 1 time fee is under $50 anyhow (and if it isn’t you should avoid them anyway).

Obviously there are other things you are probably going to want to look out for, but these are the main ones. Now you should be able to find yourself a good source of content for your PSP and if you’re still not sure, check out my site for the one I recommend.

Privacy When Downloading Movies, Games & Music Online

    Published March 12th, 2008

My previous article gave tips on how to get the best out of your P2P downloading software. This article looks at the safety and privacy issues you need to be aware of. (Note: if you require P2P download software head on over to reviewblaster.com where we review the best available).

    Controlling your P2P shared folder

Uploading files across the P2P networks involves you uploading files from other people’s shared folders (just as they can upload files from yours). You therefore need to make sure you have control over your own shared folder and only add files that you want to share. Make sure you move files in and out of the folder appropriately and remember other users can only access your shared folder and not any other files on your computer. You can opt not to share yours by disabling the file-sharing option and this is recommended if you do not want people to share files from your computer.

    Controlling your privacy

Remember, other users of P2P networks can view and download the contents of your shared folder so you should ensure that you only upload files to it that you are willing and able to share. If you are not sharing a file no-one else will have access to it.

    Choose the right software

When choosing P2P software ensure it has a full money back policy and a good customer support service in case of any issues or problems.

Always run a virus check before downloading

As with any file you download from the internet you should run a virus check on any file downloaded across a P2P network. Pay particular attention to executable or zipped files (right click on your downloaded file and choose to perform a virus scan on it before you open it.) If you don’t have a good virus scanner, get one!

    Beware of unsuitable content

Just as everywhere else on the internet ,there is a great deal of unsuitable content freely available over P2P networks if you look for it. You need to ensure the correct controls are in place, particularly if children have access to your computer. Most good P2P download sites come with parental controls anyway but the best control as ever is personal supervision. Always ensure that you are aware what your children are downloading and educate them to the dangers.

    Conclusion

Your security and privacy are very important so please follow the advice above when downloading over P2P networks. My next article goes into more detail about protection from viruses, spyware and adware.

PS. If you are interested in downloading movies, games or music I review the best software available at reviewblaster.com
